experimentelle neugier im umgang mit klang zeigt das elektronik duo artbitch bei ihren live events. ambient ähnliche flächen werden von lebendigen strukturen durchwoben um den klängen neue nuancen zu entlocken. mikrostrukturen wird nachgespürt und zu minimalistisch-funkigen beats zusammengefasst.
astrid schwarz und oliver maklott arbeiten interdisziplinär mit verschiedenen künstlerInnenn in den feldern performance, literatur und video zusammen. durch den fortdauernden, kreativen dialog mit anderen sparten entwickelt sich der sound von artbitch ständig weiter.

m4hd: paper abstract/presentation/discussion

m4hd is a gesture like art work (echoing Duchamp). It directly provokes the question of the author, whereas the author cannot be the owner of the work. m4hd web based option thus has an essential part entitled 'how-to' where each can find manuals for its execution on a personal computer. It adopts DIY mode in the sense of [re]act, [re]create and share.
Concerning a paper proposal m4hd presents a canvas for a discussion about various ideas on which further IT development is dependent. In general it is about the author and about ethical principles of progress.
We questioned the role of the author to provoke the rigid policy on intellectual rights. Since we believe that everyone is overwhelmed by current ideas and issues which she appropriates - therefore author ceases to be an owner, while continues to be a reference and a credit. We have found similar attempts in the conceptual anti-object art practices of the seventies, when the questioning of the owner of the idea instead of an object was a consequence of a growing art market. Today the issue is not only connected with the art market itself but more with the global market and the authority as such. To overide the capitalist shizophrenia we are forced to protest with sharing and open minded attitudes. m4hd is a radical example of 'stealing', to recontextualize it, and 'sharing', to allow other people to see and to use.

The system that could easily adapt to 'copyleft attitude' (www.gnu.org), or even further to the system of commons. The only virtual owner of m4hd is a computer - It generates a lo-fi visual and sonic form of data on its own.
A machine based work with literally no author is a critique of a society where the progress has run out of control. The progress today is still exclusive instead of inclusive, it is for someone instead for everyone. The gaps in development between different cultures are still huge and the working pattern should be more total by embracing the marginal groups. While we are still able to differ between real and virtual (although poststructuralists defended the unity and similarity, if not identity) we are stuck in the different method of working and awareness in the material world in contrast to the virtual world. Maybe once when we realize the union with the machine and thus realize the unity with nature (paraphrasing Richard Coyne, 2001) we will easier adopt ethic and "moral" that are in a small amount visible in the meat world (ecology, social work, civil society...)

das institut präsentiert an diesem abend einen zwischenbericht aus dem transakustischen labor: keine rationalen forschungsresultate und exakte messergebnisse, sondern paradoxe interpretationen akustischer relationen und erstellt eine mehrdimensionale kartogaphie der auditiven zwischenräume abstrakter klangflächen und phänomenologischer textlichkeit.

vokál besteht ausschliesslich aus sprachsamples. kein anderes material und keine anderen instrumente wurden verwendet. jede bassdrum und jeder vermeintliche synthesizer-klang waren einmal ein wort, ein satz oder ein laut. 70 minuten reine sprache und doch klingt es nicht so.
vokál ist elektronische musik und digitaler micro-cut-up-text zugleich. die bandbreite reicht von der vollständigen abwendung vom sprachklang bis zu halbverständlichem gebrabbel. einmal können ganze wörter ja sogar sätze verstanden werden dann wieder erscheinen nur kurz einzelne fragmente auf der click- und cut-textur, um bald darauf erneut zu verschwinden und platz für neue zu machen.
öffentliche idioten aus medien, kunst, politik und wirtschaft kommen zu wort. und werden sofort wieder zum schweigen gebracht. gesprochen wird nur, wenn es der sequencer und jörg piringer wollen. digital gestammelt wird hingegen andauernd. dadurch wird der semantisch-suggestive zusammenhang durchbrochen und der pure sprachgestus hörbar. die worte und laute scheinen so, vom sinn befreit, durch das hervorkehren der oberfläche deutlicher zu sagen, was ihr sprecher wirklich gemeint haben könnte. eine zusätzliche aussage muss nicht mehr getätigt werden, die sprecher überführen sich selbst.

Last year, she has received a grant ‘LAVOISIER’ from the Foreign Office in France to study in New York and dance at the Trisha Brown Dance Company School. Also, she performed and worked with different dance and theatre companies as well as she showed her own choreographic work in places like the Brooklyn Art Exchange, the Cunningham Dance Studio, the Gallery X, the Movement Salon …
Open to all styles, she’s been dancing for Alfred Alerte Dance Cie, le Guetteur Cie (in France), the Wax Factory, Dixie Fun Lee Production (in New York)…and might be working in Lisbon (Portugal) with Rui Horta Dance Cie in June 2002.
Nowadays, she does yoga, release-techniques (as Alexander, Klein), ballet, modern-jazz, capoiera, hip-hop, lately Salpuri dance, theater and Bruce Lee’s concepts.

From 1994 to 1996 she worked playing medieval, modern and popmusic on the streets, in restaurants, festivals, churches, concert halls and livingrooms and working with musicians from the most diverse backgrounds.
From 1996 till 1999 she did postgraduate studies in Amsterdam with Paul Leenhouts and Walter van Hauwe.
As a soloist or as member of different ensembles, she has performed ancient and modern music in Mexico, Canada, Holland, Germany, England and Austria.
Ms. Castello has obtained grants from Mexico (Fondo Nacional para la Cultura
y las Artes) and Canada (Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Canada).
Since 1999 she has been living, teaching and carrying out musical experiments in Vienna.

Currently working in the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana, running monthly events on sound, process and programming in the context of art and technology, entitled Foo Bar. She is part of the skylined.org. She curated several solo and group exhibitions (public art, new media art...). She is a freelance researcher and writer. She received several grants and cooperated on various projects (2002, British Academy, Digital Art History, 2002 Digital Strategies of the Living world, France, organised by Louis Bec and Sally Jane Norman, 1999, undergraduate study programme Central European Studies, Czech Republic, etc). She worked on Ultraskin festival of New Media and architecture with Lucy Orta, Francois Roche, Stefano Boeri etc. (2002), Manifesta 3 intern (2000). In 2003 she will work as an assitant curator to Igor Zabel at the Venice Biennial 2003, curated by Francesco Bonami.

Works in the field of sound and programming as a performer and composer. He is an artist, web-developer, dj, writer, critic, reverse engineer, part-time hacker and open source agent. Released number of web-albums (mono211.com, kahvi.org, theralite.avalon.hr, letusplay.net), running online projects skylined.org and letusplay.net, worked at Ljubljana Digital Media Lab - Ljudmila (.si) on various online, streaming and sound projects (Ljudmila Audio Studio, Ops!Comuna). Co-curated first slovene digital moving image festival Scan Line (scan-line.org), collaborated with r a d i o q u a l i a on free media system Frequency Clock and created software art project Music for Hard Disks (letusplay.net/m4hd) recently exhibited a sound installation at Kapelica Gallery (.si). All his work is based on copyleft ethics and DIY philosophy. Recently he is especially interested in transection of subjectivity, hackerism, technology, programming, user interfaces, digital networks and sound. At the moment he is based in London working on a research project "Laptop Music" for a BA (honours) degree at SAE Technology College, London
